Taxus are commonly called Yews and a number of species and cultivars are widely used in landscaping. Some of the more popular varieties offered by wholesalers are listed below.
Varieties
- Taxus baccata commonly called the English Yew. The upright form Taxus baccata fastigata makes a useful hedge or screening plant for narrow confines.
- Taxus canadensis is the Canadian Yew – varieties will reach around 8ft in height.
- Taxus cuspidata is the Japanese Yew, with Taxus cuspidata ‘nana’ being a useful low growing spreading variety.
- Taxus x media is known as the intermediate Yew. Taxus x media hicksii is widely used as a hedging plant, well suited to zones 4 – 7.
- Cephalotaxus harringtonia is the Japanese Plum Yew
