Cephalotaxus harringtonia is by far the most popular species and is often called the ‘Plum Yew’. A coniferous plant it grows into a large bush to small tree. However it is the lower growing cultivars and upright varieties that are of most interest in the garden.
Varieties
- Cephalotaxus harringtonia ‘prostrate’ is one, well suited to underplant larger trees especially in part shade.
- Cephalotaxus harringtonia ‘fastigata’ is a strongly upright form, a good low hedge or screening plant in semi shade.
- Cephalotaxus harringtonia ‘Fritz Huber’ is another low growing cultivar to consider, a dense shrubby habit and like most fairly deer resistant.
