Fritillaria liliacea (fragrant fritillary) another native from the coastal grasslands of California.
Said to be fragrant, and we think it is slightly on a warn sunny day, Fritillaria liliacea is a small growing species with dainty nodding star shaped open flowers.
This is a species that is a little late flowering for us, and as such seems to like a little protection from the hot afternoon sun. Reaching a height of around 5 inches (12cm) this is a plant that can get a little ‘lost’, we grow ours in containers.
Fritillaria liliacea are fairly easy to grow in a well drained soil. Zone 6-9.
Fritillaria liliacea Care
This is a sturdy little plant that belies its delicate flowers. Like most other species Fritillaria liliacea grows well in a well drained position to avoid bulb rot. We have been growing ours successfully in a container.
Planting
Like most bulbs they look great in clumps. We like 7 – 10 in a group, and unevenly spaced for a more ‘natural’ look.
They grow equally well in the rock garden and in a well drained container in full sun to part shade.
