Like all Orchids, Oncidiums require appropriate light, temperature, water, humidity and potting soil. Oncidiums are a varied group, however the general care notes do cover most varieties.

Generally a cool to warm growing group, protection from the sun in summer is essential as the soft leaves will indicate, so often grown in a greenhouse or shade house, depending on the climate.

Oncidium Orchid Care Details

  • Temperature – The difference here is the nighttime to daytime temperatures. Daytime ideal temperatures are from 75 F to 85 F. Cooler nights should be between 55F and 65 F. In winter, a little cooler, but only a little.
  • Light – Again, generally filtered light, consider bright dappled shade as a rule. You can easily tell if the amount of light is right by by the foliage color. Bright green is good, dark green means not enough light. Red tones mean to much light.
  • Water / Moisture – Allow plants to dry out a little between waterings. The amount of water varies depending on the growth cycle, more water when in active growth. Oncidiums should never be allowed to stand in water.
  • Humidity – The higher the temperature the more humidity. 50% up to 75%. However ventilation and air movement are essential.
  • Potting Soil – Best to repot when in active growth, as new shoots appear. Generally every 3 years you need to remove all of the old mix, clean up the roots and repot. This is also the time to divide.
