Miscanthus sinensis is one species of a group of ornamental grasses used widely in landscaping.
Also known as Maiden Grass this is a perennial grass growing to over 3m depending on species and cultivar.
Although we are looking at varieties used as ornamental grasses, in landscaping situations, some of the larger growing types of Miscanthus are also being used as a ‘bio fuel crop’.
Miscanthus sinenesis Care
Foliage dries off and dies back in fall, however most gardeners leave the old foliage and flower heads through winter as they add interest and height to the garden. Leaving the foliage through winter also acts as a natural protection from the cold.
In spring its time to prune Miscanthus sinensis back to the ground, just above the new emerging growth. This is also a good time to divide larger clumps.
Miscanthus sinenesis varieties and cultivars include:
Species such as Miscanthus sinenesis are the most popular for ornamental use with cultivars such as ‘morning light’, ‘little kitten’, ‘gold bar’ and ‘caberet’ all being popular.
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Little kitten’ will only reach 3′ and is a popular landscaping plant.
‘Morning Light’ will reach nearly twice this height but have a lovely silvery look created by the lighter colored leaf margins.
Miscanthus sinensis Adagio is another low growing cultivar reaching 3′ ( or less depending on conditions)
Miscanthus sinensis zebrinus is also known as ‘Japanese Silver Grass’, the green foliage is banded with yellow. Excellent for Japanese style Gardens
