If you are looking for a flowering tree with a difference then Corymbia Ficifolia (formerly Eucalyptus Ficifolia) is the well known red flowering gum tree from Australia.
With attractive red flowers and nice glossy foliage this is a tough drought tolerant tree that is best suited to USDA Zones 10 – 11 and it grows well in areas such as California.
Although it is a tree that grows well in warm coastal areas, these versatile tree will also grow well in inland areas even in foothill areas, and will flower profusely.
Well suited for use as a street tree or as an ornamental feature tree in a larger garden.
Reaching a height of up to 40ft, but generally less, some grafted varieties are now becoming available, and while not actually dwarf are much smaller growing trees to around 15ft.
Care
The main requirements are a well drained soil and full sun. In general fertilizer is not required as these trees will grow well and flower in poor soil.
Young trees should be staked to allow them to form a good upright habit. Pruning is generally not required as they do develop a natural bushy habit.
Water during summer through the first year, after this establishment period the Red Flowering Gum should require little to no extra water, except in very dry years.
