Corymbia citriodora (syn. Eucalyptus citriodora) is the tree that produces lemon eucalyptus oil or lemon scented eucalyptus oil (citronella).
As with most Eucalypts this is a tough drought tolerant tree that grows well in areas such as California.
Corymbia citriodora (Lemon Scented Gum) is well suited for use as a street tree or as an ornamental feature tree in a larger garden. The oil is extracted from the leaves to be used as an insect repellent.
Small white flowers in winter are not a major feature., however the smooth mottled trunks, pink and gray bark are very attractive.
Care
This is a tall growing species that can reach 100 ft in height, although often less. Erect in habit with an open canopy.
The main requirements are a well drained soil and full sun. In general fertilizer is not required as these trees will grow well and flower in poor soil.
Young trees should be staked to allow them to form a good upright habit. Pruning is generally not required as they do develop a natural bushy habit.
Water during summer through the first year, after this establishment period the Lemon Scented Gum should require little to no extra water, except in very dry years.
It is best suited to USDA Zones 8 – 11.
